If you're still not clear on what credit default swaps or collateralized debt obligations are, or why these are bad things, now's your chance to find out:

You've probably heard of the Khan Academy by now, but I'll just chip in and give it my recommendation. It's a set of accessible lectures on maths, science and economics delivered via YouTube. They cover roughly from early high school through to early University (there's a primary school level maths course too though).

I've been working through the biology course, as having studied physics and chemistry at school, that's an area where my knowledge is sadly lacking.

Quite possibly the maddest thing I've seen (or heard) all week:

Probably also wins an award for best abuse of a stepper motor.

I'd forgotten all about that one. I have to blame SparkFun for linking to the "refrigerator/vodka assisted overclocking" page.

[livejournal.com profile] gominokouhai and [livejournal.com profile] stormsearch confirm that this recipe does indeed work:

Although when they say "serves 4-6", surely they mean "serves 8-12." Unless you have an inhuman appetite for chocolate. (And when I say inhuman, I mean it. This is coming from a card carrying member of chocoholics anonymous).

A couple of months ago, Lawrence Wright (NFGMan) wrote a rant about Xbox Live Arcade. He more or less sums up the reasosn for my reluctance to get involved with XBLA far batter than I ever could. You can read it here:

I suggest you do.

All you need is a band saw, an arc welder, and a shit load of steel tubing and perspex.

I read a really heartwarming article today on OS News about the joys of being a modern day RISCOS user. I didn't realize that there existed a port of Firefox for the system, which is quite an inspirational piece of knowledge.

It always cheers me up to hear of people keeping their dream alive, and fighting on to have a place of refuge to call their own.

Incidental to the article, here are details of the A9home system mentioned:

There's something really appealing about the svelte form factor of that machine.

What happens when anyone can edit your encyclopedia.

Dhruba sent me this link:

DJ Q*Bert working some magic.

The Good

The DJs played some fantabulous music. As promised, a blend of electroclash, punk and electro-house. The highlight for me was the mash-up of Vitalic's Fa Rock and Rock Show by Peaches.

Once the people there started dancing, they actually turned out to be quite friendly.

The Bad

The place was almost empty for a good part of the evening, and no-one danced for a looong time. Boring.

Sorry, but I don't do conversation.
